What color is Clara's hair, anyway?!

So some of you may of seen the UK cover floating around the internet. It's beautiful, ethereal and provoking, I think, but when I first saw it some months ago, it kind of made me laugh. I've had four covers designed for Unearthly, and each one shows Clara with a different hair color! This kind of makes sense, since in the book, Clara is a blonde but dyes her hair (disasterously, I might add) to red in Chapter 2. But now I have them all.

Check it out:

Clara as a platinum blonde, in the UK.

Then there's:

Clara as a red-head. What I love most about this one is the orange, smoky forest. And, of course, the dress.

Then we have:

Clara in purple. Ha ha. Okay, so we can't quite tell what color her hair is, but she seems to me like a brunette. (That and I know the model has brown hair. . .)

And finally:

The raven-haired Portuguese Clara. I was drinking a glass of milk when my husband showed me this cover, and I literally spit milk all over the counter. It's a cool cover, that I will give it, but Clara was showing a bit more skin than I expected. Hee hee. My husband reminded me that everything is more exciting in Portugal.

So, what do you think? Which model seems the most like Clara to you?

I am waiting with bated breath to see what they come up with for the Hallowed cover.

In other news, Unearthly is coming to ebook (yes, I mentioned this before) on April 19, so just a few days now! You can pre-order it from Amazon here.

And it will be available in the UK on May 2. Woohoo! I got my box of UK editions this week, and I am completely charmed by the way they changed the word "Mom" to "Mum," as in "I find Mum standing at the kitchen stove. . ." Love it.

And tomorrow (takes deep breath) I am showing my face to the public again, at least in the authorial sense. I am thrilled to be taking part in the Ontario City Library Teen Book Fest in Ontario, CA along with Katie Alender, Nancy Holder, Alyson Noel, and Marlene Perez from 1-4 pm. There will be a question and answer session and a book signing, so if you live nearby, come by and see me! I will also (takes another deep breath) have my baby girl Maddie with me, as she does pretty well strapped to my chest (I taught my novel-writing class with her in a carrier on Wednesday, and she was fabulous and quiet and just looked at my students all perplexed while they cooed at her).

Cross your fingers for me that she cooperates this time.

Wow, that Portuguese cover is quite...racy. My favorite cover is probably the US one, followed closely by the Clara as a redhead cover.

I have to say that the Clara in my head looks more like the Clara on the US Cover. It's interesting to see how many hair colors Clara can sport. :)

Oh my goodness, Cynthia! I totally would have spit my milk out too! I had almost the same reaction (though thankfully I wasn't drinking anything) scrolling down and seeing the Portuguese version amongst the covers - and it's not even my book. :)

I seriously love the purple US cover but I actually think the UK cover does the best job portraying Clara as she really is - the background's great as well!

It's fun to see all the different covers!

I LOVED Unearthly! ♥♥♥

The US cover is my favourite one, it's how I pictured Clara while reading the book. Even though her hair is purple (lol), I thought it should be brown for some reason as well.
I absolutely LOVED Unearthly and can't wait to read Hallowed!

Hmm, I think the girl on the purple cover is sort of how I see Clara (but with red hair). And...is the girl actually topless in the Portuguese cover?

Oh, and when you said Ontario, CA I thought you meant the Ontario in Canada and I got excited for a second...until I realized. Awww...

I like the platinum blonde. She looks like an angel that just stepped onto earth with a purpose, She looks determined and headstrong, just like Clara!

They're all so different & great (the last one a bit ahh but still), I think the 2nd one is gorgeous though! I just want to let you know I just bought and finished UNEARTHLY and I'm in love with it, you're amazing! Thank you :)

I like the 2nd and 3rd the best (the US cover seems to capture her facial expression the best). The 1st is a nice ethereal touch and the last one...ahem...may be a little too much skin for me...and I think the least like Clara.

They're all fabulous covers. The Portugese one might be how Tucker pictures her :)

The Portuguese cover definitely made my eyes go O_O NOT how I imagined sweet, girl-next-door Clara. No no no. I think The US cover more closely matches my idea of Clara, but I am IN LOVE with the UK cover. I can't stop staring at it. It's just so stunning!

Haha - I'm English and whenever I read American versions of books get totally confused by things like "Mom", "center" and "maneuver"!

I love the red-headed Clara cover the best - that forest is atmospheric to the max (although, the Portuguese cover does take the concept of `to the max` to a new level...)

Hi!
Also, Portuguese girl from this side of the computer.
Kinda agree with you about the Portuguese cover, when I saw it in the library, was kinda O_O. But we are kinda used to it by now! After all, what really matters is the contempt, right? :D
Love all covers but I have to say that my favorite one is the UK cover. Clara seems really angel like in that one!
Loved the book and hoping, praying and waiting on the next one!

I think Clara for me is the US version (considering I have that one) but for some reason, it doesn't seem like she's a brunette there, she seems like she has dirty blonde hair, in my opinion.

Though my second favourite is the UK version! If the hair didn't seem so white and straight, it would fit Clara's "glory"!

I really like the UK cover with the platinum blonde hair but i love the dress in the US cover. Throughout the whole book i could not picture the red head girl it said she was so the red-head one helped me picture that. Can't wait for hallowed i love the cover for it!!!

I'm portuguese and I read "Unearthly" a year and a half ago, I loved it but had no idea that there would be a next one (which really made me and my best friend very sad), Two days ago I looked at Unearthly in my shelf and began reading, I remembered my obsession about it, so I googled and found out about Hallowed, Radiant and Boundless. I screamed so loud...
And I found this post, what's it with the Portuguese cover I think it refers to Clara naked of all she has known, naked of everything just to grow up and fall in love and embrace her powers, I conceed that maybe it is related her desire for Christian and Tucker, ok... And the cover is sexy, when I was reading it a colleague of mine told me "Can I see it? I'd buy it just for the naked chick.". I liked that cover a lot, I think it is truly angelic, spiritual and divine and I wasn't the tiniest bit shocked for it - it's a beautiful naked girl, cool, it's refreshing, actually.
And we're not generally depraved in Portugal, just like everywhere else some of us are, not everybody. But I still think the cover is quite artistic ;)
So, step a little out of your perjudices and appeciatte the work of art.

I do not mean to be mean, I just want to give another perspective to this discussion about the portuguese cover.

Finally, I just want to say that I love this series ;) and I'm a writer too ;)
